A look back on the 12 year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina

BATON ROUGE, LA (LOCAL33) (FOX44) - This month marks the 12 year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. This comes as Tropical Storm Harvey continues to rip through Texas leaving behind images of devastation, images residents here Louisiana know all to well.

On August 29, 2005 Hurricane Katrina ripped through southwest Louisiana leaving behind a trail of destruction. The category 3 hurricane brought over 125 miles per hour winds and dumped more than a foot of water on New Orleans.

Heart breaking images of families stranded on roof tops and highways completely submerged in flood water. In the days following the storm, devastation set in.

As the city worked to piece itself back together, a story of defeat soon turned to a story of resilience. Neighbors helping neighbors. The same story our neighbors in Houston are experiencing today.

It took many years to recover from the powerful Hurricane Katrina, but the resilience of our state was even more powerful.
