Angola inmate dies after fight with cellmate

BATON ROUGE, La. (LOCAL 33) (FOX 44) - An inmate at the Louisiana State Penitentiary has died, following a fight with his cellmate Friday night.

State corrections officials said 36-year-old Gamarus Everett died in a Baton Rouge hospital Monday night. On Friday night, officers performing their rounds found 41-year-old Jessie Grace on top of Everett, who was unresponsive. Officers broke up the fight and revived Everett using CPR.

A prison doctor diagnosed Everett with life-threatening injuries before responders transported the inmate to the hospital.

Everett, serving a life sentence for a second-degree murder in Bossier Parish, had resided at Angola since March 2002. Grace, serving a life sentence for a second-degree murder in Jefferson Parish, has been at the facility since March 1994.

Corrections officials said an autopsy on Everett will be performed this week. Pending its results, possible criminal charges against Grace are pending.

The West Feliciana Parish Sheriff's Office and the Louisiana Department of Corrections are investigating the case.
