Ascension launches prom and graduation safety campaign

BATON ROUGE, La (LOCAL 33) - Ascension Public Schools launches its 6th annual prom and graduation safety campaign. Through multi-faceted outreach efforts, high school students are encouraged not to use drugs or alcohol while celebrating prom or graduation. 
 
"This initiative began with a grant from the Capital Area Human Services and has grown each year to include partnerships with law enforcement, local officials and state agencies all committed to the safety of our students," said Ascension Public Schools Superintendent David Alexander. "The message is important for both students and their parents: 'Don't let one bad decision decide your future.'"
 
Elements of the campaign include the following:
  • Posters and banners posted at all high schools
  • Admission wrist bands for all students entering prom;
  • Postcards mailed to the homes of all juniors and seniors;
  • Labels on containers holding prom flowers and tuxedo rental bags at local shops;
  • Cable television ads on EATEL and Cox including sponsored spots by Tiger Honda;
  • Billboards strategically placed in the community;
  • Screen savers on all high school computers and digital signs;
  • Announcements at school events and athletic events;
  • Messages in the Ascension Counseling Center newsletter and on Ascension Parish TV Channel 21; and
  • Website and social media advertisements.
The following are prom and graduation dates by school:
  • Donaldsonville High: Apr. 22 prom; May 12 graduation
  • Dutchtown High: Mar 25 prom; May 12 graduation
  • East Ascension High: Apr. 1 prom; May 11 graduation
  • St. Amant High: Apr. 8 prom; May 10 graduation
The campaign is made possible in partnership with the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office, Gonzales Police Department, Louisiana State Police, Ascension Parish Government, 23rd Judicial District Attorney and Capital Area Human Services.
