Baton Rouge Bicentennial Committee invites writers to submit essays for time capsule

BATON ROUGE, La (LOCAL 33) (FOX 44) - The Baton Rouge Bicentennial Committee is looking for local published authors to write essays describing “My Baton Rouge” for a time capsule that will commemorate the city’s 200th birthday.

The Bicentennial Project, Baton Rouge Writes, invites local writers to submit a short essay up to 500 words in length for future generations to discover. The submissions will be compiled and sealed in a time capsule that will be placed in the new River Center Library downtown later this year.

“We are calling on our local authors to paint a picture with words of how they see Baton Rouge in 2017,” said Mary Stein, Assistant Library Director for the East Baton Rouge Parish Library and Chair of the Bicentennial Committee. “We want to capture the landscape, the culture, the economy and the very spirit of Baton Rouge for generations to come and we believe our local professional writers can tell that story better than anyone.”

Interested authors are asked to submit their names along with the title(s) of their published work by email to BatonRouge200@gmail.com to receive complete instructions for submitting essays. The deadline for submittals is September 1.

The Baton Rouge Bicentennial is a yearlong celebration celebrating 200 years since “Red Stick” officially became the City of Baton Rouge.  Baton Rouge was founded in 1699 and was incorporated as a city on January 17, 1817.  The yearlong observance culminates with the Fifth Annual Red Stick Revelry on New Year’s Eve.
