Baton Rouge students attend robotics program sponsored by 100 Black Men of Metro Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE, La. (LOCAL 33) (FOX 44) - Over 30 students participated in a 4-week-long summer robotics academy, sponsored by 100 Black Men of Metro

Baton Rouge, to learn lessons in science, mathematics, wellness and friendship. The program concluded with a twopart

competition held on July 13 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Kenilworth Science and Technology School.

Participants learned hands-on skills in programming, coding and computer technology under the direction of teachers from Kenilworth Science and Technology School. The students were also provided the opportunity to befriend other young individuals who share the same passion for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

The final day of the program included a two-part competition. First, the student-constructed robots were challenged to navigate a maze. Students used computer coding skills to program the robots to avoid the walls, make turns and back-up if they encountered a barrier. After, the groups put their bots head-to-head for a battle. To conclude, students were awarded certificates in areas of outstanding engineering, science and programming skills.

The 100 Black Men of Metro Baton Rouge sponsored the robotics academy. The program was free of charge to students through a grant from The DOW Chemical Company.

“This is our fourth year with the program. We started it to enrich the summer, because educators said that the kids fall off in the summer,” said Fred Sibley, president of 100 Black Men of Metro Baton Rouge. “STEM and robotics is just a small piece of it. Through putting together the robots they learned more than just coding and math skills.”

Sibley continued, “We had about 35 kids here this summer, we’d like to expand it to 100 kids. We’d like to continue doing it through collaborating with community partners who support us.”

The 100 Black Men of Metro Baton Rouge offer many programs to enhance the lives of youth in the Baton Rouge community. To learn more about the 100 Black Men and their organization, visit
