Blood drive held at State Capitol in honor of U.S. Congressman Steve Scalise

BATON ROUGE, LA (LOCAL 33) (FOX 44) - Friday at the Louisiana State Capitol, two Lifeshare Blood Center buses set up for anyone who wants to give blood in honor of injured U.S. Congressman Steve Scalise. Legislators even took time out of their busy schedules to give back to their colleague, whom many consider a friend.

"This is about our colleague Steve Scalise, in fact, Steve and I were roommates for 12 years when we were in the legislature. So, it probably has an even deeper meaning for me, seeing him lying on the field, seeing what happened to him... Truly heroic efforts by his colleagues just to quit the bleeding, and as we know now, several units of blood when he got there, but it was truly a life or death threat, and this is where we're at today," said Republican Senator Mike Walsworth.

"People can, in a concrete way, give something back to make sure that members of our community that will unfortunately be in need in the coming days and weeks will have the supply that they need when they need it. It's just a reminder of how critical it is," said Democratic Speaker Pro Temp of the Louisiana House of Representative Walt Leger.

The blood drive lasted from 11:00 Friday morning to around 3:00 that afternoon.
