Body Found in MS River

BATON ROUGE, La (LOCAL 33) (FOX 44) - On this Labor Day, something unexpected was found floating on the Mississippi River.

"We received a call from the coast guard out in New Orleans that a passing tugboat on the river found a body floating on the river," said Plaquemine Police Chief Kenny Payne.

The body was found floating 150 feet from the river bank. Two girls waking up from a sleepover said they were confused and completely surprised to hear the news.

"We were really shocked," said Grace Favron and Baylee Thibodeaux. "Who knows how long it was staying there and what happened and what caused it and everything."

The two also said that the neighborhood on Seminary St. is usually peaceful.

"You never really hear that there's a dead body in this neighborhood," said Grace Favron.

However, the investigation still remains.

"We have what appears to be a black male in his thirties," said Chief Payne. "Water has done a lot of damage to the facial recognition. It's hard to see."

The discovery had promised to clear up another case; however, it has been confirmed that the body isn't tied to the Zachary inmate who was accused of killing his lover last weekend.

The East Baton Rouge Sherriff's Department has the body in hopes of identifying it.
