BRCC to host ninth annual community arts celebration

BATON ROUGE, La (LOCAL 33) - Baton Rouge Community College will host its ninth annual community arts celebration (Arts Fest) April 1 through April 13. 

Taking place at three of its locations - Mid City campus, 201 Community College Drive; Acadian site, 3250 N. Acadian Thruway; and Frazier Art Annex site, 555 Julia St., Arts Fest is a combination of visual and performing arts that seeks to enhance study and culture for BRCC and its surrounding community. This year's theme is "LINES." All events are free and open to the public.

Arts Fest will host an unofficial kickoff, April 1 through 2 at the Ebb & Flow Festival on the Baton Rouge Waterfront. Festival attendees will have the opportunity to visit with Arts Fest performers and organizers to learn more about the upcoming events. Preliminary events including a reading, discussion and book signing by acclaimed children's author Julia Cook will take place at BRCC's Mid City campus on April 1 at 10 a.m. A reception will follow. 

The official Arts Fest kickoff breakfast will be held on Monday, April 3 at 8 a.m. on the Mid City campus in the Bienvenue Student Center. April 3 events also include a student talent show.

Tuesday, April 4 activities include an animation lecture, a bookbinding workshop with live jazz, and a creative writing workshop. On Wednesday, April 5, Drew Riley of S/ASH Creative will host the talk, "Stay Creative/Stay Local," at 10 a.m. in the Recital Hall in the Governor's building on the Mid City campus. Festivities continue that day at Frazier with a ceramics workshop and a three day live mural painting by Baton Rouge visual artist, Marc Fresh. On Thursday, April 6, filmmaker Aaron Grier will screen his film, "Getting Grown," at noon in the Magnolia Theatre in the Magnolia building on the Mid City campus. A reception will follow. A faculty recital will be held Friday, April 7 at 10 a.m. in the Recital Hall in the Governor's Building on the Mid City campus.

Kicking off week two of Arts Fest at 8:30 a.m. at Frazier on Monday, April 10 is "Beyond the Garage," a puppeteering workshop with Clay Achee. The day will continue with the panel discussion, "Careers in the Arts," at 11 a.m. in the Recital Hall in the Governor's building on the Mid City campus. At noon, Barbra Donovon will lead a ceramics workshop at Frazier. On Tuesday, April 11, a printmaking workshop will be held at 8:30 a.m. at Frazier, followed by a pinhole camera demo and workshop at noon. Performance artist, Bonny McDonald, will lead "Racy Performance Workshop" at 1:30 p.m. in the Black Box Theatre in the Magnolia building on the Mid City campus.

Wednesday, April 12 is full day for Arts Fest starting at Acadian with a silkscreen t-shirt workshop, where participants can design their own t-shirts, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the Print Shop. Acadian activities continue at 11 a.m. with a culinary arts lunch and display in the cafeteria. A ceramics workshop will be held at noon at Frazier, and at 4:30 p.m., students from the literary arts nonprofit, Forward Arts will perform poetry. A Liberal Arts Transfer Fair will be held from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Magnolia Gallery of the Magnolia building on the Mid City campus. All universities where BRCC credits are accepted have been invited to participate.

 A student art showcase will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 13 in the Magnolia Gallery in the Magnolia building on the Mid City campus, featuring poetry by former BRCC student, Antione Lacey. A brunch reception will follow, with art winners being announced at noon. Closing out Arts Fest on April 13 is the day-long Mid City Jazz Festival in the Magnolia Theatre and Gallery, which will begin with a jazz competition. The winners will perform with the judges - acclaimed musicians Troy Davis, Leroy Jones and Robert Nash - that evening in the Magnolia Theatre.
