BATON ROUGE, La. (LOCAL 33) (FOX 44) - UPDATE: (7:26 a.m.) Gonzales Police searching for two suspects after firing shots at police early Tuesday morning.
At approximately 2:47 a.m. Tuesday morning, Gonzales Police Officers pulled over a vehicle for suspicious driving in the Orice Roth area. Police say two men jumped out of the vehicle and starting firing shots at the officers while fleeing the scene.
Police began searching in the Oak Terrace area but were unable to locate either of the suspects. The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office was called in to help secure a perimeter in the area. A number of other agencies including Baton Rouge Police Air Patrol, Baton Rouge K-9 and the Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office were also called in to help.
School officials were contacted due to the close proximity of the incident to Gonzales Middle School. As a result, school is delayed today until 9:23 a.m.
At this time the suspects are still at large. Officials say they are confident there is no immediate threat to the school. A shelter in place order was lifted at 7:05 a.m.
Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office asks that if anyone has any information or sees anyone acting suspicious to contact deputies at (225)-621-8300.
The Gonzales Middle School will open on a 2-hour delay while the Gonzales Police Department searches for a suspect in the area of the school.
According to Jackie Tisdell, Public Information Officer for the Ascension Parish Schools, this message was sent to Gonzales Middle School parents,
"There will be a 2-hour delayed start for Gonzales Middle School today while Gonzales Police Department searches for a suspect in the area by the school. Unless further advised by law enforcement, plans are for school to begin at 9:23 a.m. Students should plan for a 2-hour change in bus pickup time."
