Local leaders gather at State Capital for Health Day

Leaders in opposition of HB1 rallied for health care in Louisiana

BATON ROUGE La. (LOCAL 33) (FOX 44) - Supporters for Louisiana's access to healthcare rallied on the steps at the State Capital on Wednesday for Health Day.

Alma Stewart with the LA Center for Gulf Equity said Louisiana residents signed up for Medicaid and the SNAP program would suffer most from budget cuts proposed by the Trump Administration.

"Our state is poised to take some devastating cuts which will be a huge hit on access to healthcare we are very concerned," Stewart said.

If the Senate does not reverse the budget cuts, Jeanie Donavon with the Louisiana Budget Project says the services our most vulnerable rely on, could be taken away.

Donavon said, "If the state budget goes through we are going to leave 237 million dollars on the table, taken mostly from healthcare. We are not sure what will be cut but things on the table are things like case management services, psyche social rehab services for youth, social services. Take that 237 million dollars and put it back where it belongs, in the Department of Health."

Our state budget relies on money from the Federal Government to help pay for Medicaid. If the Trump Administration budget passes in its current form, the Medicaid cuts would affect Louisiana's budget, which has already been passed by the house and is now up for debate in the Senate.

There will be public testimony on the budget bill Saturday at the State Capital.

Stewart said, "We need everyone to show up. If you don't like what is going on. You need to be filling out one of those cards. You need to be giving your opposition to these budget cuts."
