LSU gives more details on potential Mike VII

BATON ROUGE, LA (LOCAL 33) (FOX 44) - Flowers still outside of Tiger Habitat in remembrance of Louisiana State University's beloved live mascot Mike VI.

In October 2016, the LSU community lost a member of its family. Now, August 2017, the university has identified a possible Mike VII.

"I believe it's a nine-month-old male, juvenile tiger that weighs about 160 pounds," said Ginger Guttner, the communications manager of the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine.

So, this means Tiger fans can rejoice, right?! Wait, not just yet, Guttner said it is a process.

"The renovations have to be finished first, and then arrangements have to be made to move the tiger. The tiger has to come, and even once the tiger arrives, just because the tiger is on campus doesn't automatically make it Mike VII. There is a quarantine acclamation period where he will be in his night house for about a week, but again, that's slightly subject to change," explained Guttner.

Guttner said construction is expected to be done soon.

For many Tiger fans and students, like LSU Junior Ashlyn Head, knowing that this habitat will be filled once again gives them hope.

"I think me, along with all the other students, we're very excited. I think it would be great for Mike VII to be here before football season. So, it would really get the team going, get the students going. I think it would be really awesome. Everyone is so excited," said Head.

"Once the tiger comes outside, LSU will make that announcement. The plan is the day before. So, the day before, when the acclamation period we feel is successful and over, and once the tiger comes outside. Then he is Mike VII," said Guttner.

Local animal advocates urged the university not to get another tiger saying captive animals are "deprived of everything that is natural and important to them," but LSU officials have defended the practice saying mike gets top-of-the-line medical care.

You could see the new tiger in a month or so, but officials said that is subject to change.
