MOHSEP monitoring and offering tips for cold weather conditions

BATON ROUGE, La (LOCAL 33) (FOX 44) - The National Weather Service in Slidell has issued an advisory for East Baton Rouge Parish regarding the potential for winter weather and freezing temperatures.

Forecasts are predicting a slight chance of snow flurries and a high chance of freezing temperatures. Winter precipitation will potentially occur Thursday night into Friday morning. Freezing temperatures are likely Friday, Saturday, and Sunday morning. At this time, Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome has not called for any closures or event cancellations in the parish. The Mayor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (MOHSEP) is continuing to monitor the situation.
MOHSEP has stressed that residents check on neighbors and family members who may need assistance and take care of their pets. Those who use heaters and fireplaces should be careful. A fire extinguisher should be ready for use as well.
Other tips include:

  • Check family disaster supply kits to ensure they are prepared for the winter.
  • Bring pets inside.
  • Protect, cover or wrap water pipes.
  • Protect plants as necessary.
  • Ensure proper ventilation for fuel-burning equipment.
  • Refuel heating sources outside.
  • Test smoke detectors.
