New information in officer-involved shooting investigation

BATON ROUGE, La (LOCAL 33) (FOX 44) - Louisiana State Police has released more information regarding the fatal officer-involved shooting in Baton Rouge Monday evening. 

According to authorities, investigators learned that a Department of Child and Family Services social worker was conducting an investigation into possible child abuse allegations committed by 24-year-old Calvin Toney. 

Due to the nature of Toney's allegations and previous history, the social worker requested an escort from the Baton Rouge Police Department. 

After the case worker and officer made contact with Toney, authorities said the suspect attempted to flee on foot. A struggle between the officer and Toney took place, leading the officer to tase the suspect multiple times. 

During the altercation, authorities said the officer fired one shot at the suspect's chest. Toney then began to flee and was later taken into police custody. For safety reasons, the suspect was placed into handcuffs. 

Authorities said the suspect remained alert while receiving medical attention from responding officers. After EMS arrived to the scene,Toney was pronounced dead. 

Autopsy results from the East Baton Rouge Coroner's Office confirmed the suspect died from one gunshot wound to the chest. 

At this time, body camera and surveillance footage are being reviewed. The incident remains under investigation.
