Sheriff's office offering training to meet church handgun carrying requirements

LIVINGSTON, La. (LOCAL 33) (FOX 44) - On the heels of the deadliest mass shooting at an American place of worship, the Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office will be offering tactical training classes for church members wishing to carry a concealed handgun.

Current law requires an additional eight hours of training on top of concealed carry classes in order to carry a concealed handgun on church property.

The law states:

"Any church, synagogue, or mosque authorizing the carrying of concealed handguns pursuant to the provisions of this subsection shall require an additional eight hour tactical training for those persons wishing to carry concealed handguns in the church, synagogue, or mosque. The training shall be conducted annually."

"This is a wing off the conceal carry classes and, in order for you to carry your concealed weapon inside a church, you have to go through an additional eight hours of training," Livingston Parish Sheriff Jason Arn said. "That's why we built curriculum to offer that."

The training will include hands-on simulations.

"This is a bit more of scenario type stuff," Arn said. "We will put them inside some buildings. We will use simunition rounds, which is not live rounds, and we will actually do scenarios of active shooters."

Bethel Baptist Church pastor Charles Ellzey said the deadly shooting in Sutherland Springs, Texas serves as a reminder to think about emergency preparedness.

"I guess it's just a reminder that it can happen anywhere," Ellzey said. "I think it's good they are being proactive."
