"Sounds of CommUNITY" Concert Set for Sunday, May 21

BATON ROUGE, La (LOCAL 33) - The 27th annual Sounds of CommUNITY concert and reception will be held at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 2025 Stuart Ave. on Sunday, May 21, at 3 pm. The musical selections will be primarily performed by white and black congregations who have joined together in partnerships.

"Some of these pairings have been formed in response to  the community's recent hardships, including last summer’s fatal shootings and the flood. Two pairings (Elm Grove Baptist Church and St. Paul Lutheran Church: Camphor United Methodist Church and Unitarian Church of Baton Rouge) have participated in the Interfaith Federation’s Congregation-to-Congregation Initiative for over 20 years," said Rev. Robin McCullough-Bade, director of the Interfaith Federation.

The Sounds of CommUNITY Concert began in 1991 by Rev. Charles Smith when he served as president of the Federation. The late Rev. Smith's words still ring true today: Recent events have made all of us more sensitive to the need for people of good will to make their presence felt.

The Interfaith Federation of Greater Baton Rouge has a unique opportunity to demonstrate love and mutual respect for all, to the rest of the community. Rev. Smith believed music could bring diverse people together, said Rev. McCullough-Bade.

The concert is open to the public and is free with donations designated for the work of the Interfaith Federation.

The seven partnerships scheduled to participate this year are Elm Grove Baptist Church and St. Paul Lutheran Church; Neely United Methodist Church and University United Methodist Church; Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and St. Aloysius Catholic Church; St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church and Broadmoor United Methodist Church; St. Mary Baptist Church and St. Thomas More Catholic Church; Jordan United Methodist Church and Trinity Episcopal Church; Camphor Memorial United Methodists and Unitarian Church.

St. Aloysius Catholic Church is located at 2025 Stuart Avenue in Baton Rouge. For more information go to ifedgbr.org.
