Valverda Elementary Wins National Award

BATON ROUGE, La. - The National Foundation for Governors' Fitness Councils awarded Valverda Elementary with a $100,000 fitness center.

Governor John Bel Edwards, First Lady Donna Edwards and NFCFC Founder Jake Steinfeld joined the Valverda Kittens for a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Steinfeld and Governor Edwards spoke to students about the importance of living a healthy and active lifestyle.

Physical Education Teacher, Sara Taylor, nominated the school and was elated when they won the "Don't Quit" Fitness Center.

"We live in a rural area and our children don't always have opportunities like this in our parish," Taylor said.

The physical fitness grant donated $100,000 worth of equipment for the students and their families to use.

Valverda Elementary is one of three Louisiana schools to win the "Don't Quit" Fitness Center. Park Elementary in Baton Rouge and Luling Elementary also won the NFGFC award.
