Virginia College In Baton Rouge announces two new program

BATON ROUGE, La. (LOCAL 33) (FOX 44) - Virginia College of Baton Rouge has announced they are now offering two new programs on their Cortana Place in September.

An Electrical Technician diploma program and a Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVACR) technician program will now be available this fall for students to enroll into.

“Our instructors bring a wide range of work experience to the classroom, and their backgrounds will help our students gain industry information and tips that take others years to learn on their own,” says Campus President Bill Wells. “These new programs will help students to earn a diploma and develop professional and ethical practices that equip them to succeed in their desired fields.”

The Electrical Technician diploma program can be completed in 48 weeks and/or 12 modules. The program equips students to work with electrical systems, including power, communications, lighting and control systems in environments such as hospitals, retail businesses, commercial buildings and more. The instructors also help students find an externship to equip them with real-world experience prior to graduation.

The new HVACR diploma is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely install, troubleshoot and repair equipment used in the home and light commercial industry. This program also includes preparation for the following certification examinations: Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certification, Industry Competency Exams (ICE) and North American Technician Excellence (NATE) certification.

Upon successful completion of the HVACR technician program, graduates will be able to isolate malfunctions in heating, air conditioning, heat pump and refrigeration systems as well as design, fabricate and install ductwork to provide proper airflow in heating and cooling systems, among other skills.

Completion of the HVACR training can take as little as 48 weeks and/or 12 modules. Students who receive their HVACR diploma can pursue careers as HVACR technicians, HVACR installer/repair technicians or small appliance technicians. According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics 2015 wage data and 2014-2024 employment projections, jobs in this area are projected to grow an average of 14 percent.

Upon completion of the programs, the Virginia College Career Development team will help students develop job-search skills and open doors to employment.
