Workout Wednesday: The correct way to perform exercises

BATON ROUGE, LA (LOCAL33) (FOX44) - In this week's Workout Wednesday we show you how to properly perform different exercises to make sure you are safe and get the most out of your workouts!

We all know the go to exercises push-ups, squats, planks etc. But are you doing these moves correctly? Meredith Atterbery with the YMCA explains.

"It's very common for people to be doing exercises wrong. Whether you're new to the game or a veteran to working out, a lot of times people just need a second set of eyes."

First up stretching.

"Stretching can be used as part of your warm up. So some dynamic stretching before and also some static stretching after."

Atterbery said the biggest mistake here is not stretching at all!.

"It increases your risks of injury just because your muscles tend to be a little tight."

Moving on to squats.

"Probably the most common one is people shifting their weight on to their toes, chest going down and coming up on your toes. The right way to do it is keeping your chest nice and tall, chin up, butt down, feet hip distance apart and do down."

Next, push-ups.

"It's very common to see people lower their chin towards the ground or lower their forehead. The first thing you want to reach the ground is your chest."

Moving on to planks. The key is to keep your body straight.

"So you have a straight line between your head, shoulders, hips and heels. Anytime you break that plane you're not getting that ideal firing of the muscles."

Shoulder presses.

"You see a lot of people pressing out in front where your chest does most of the work, or going behind your head. Use ears as a reference."

And finally lat pull downs.

"The same for lat pull downs. Lots of times people go behind their heads. This stresses your neck."

And if you ever have questions don't be afraid to ask.

"We do offer free personal training on our active tracks. It creates a personal workout list for you and shows you videos on how to perform the activity."

Hopefully you can take these tips and apply them to your next workout.
