Wreaths Across America event honors Baton Rouge gold star families

BATON ROUGE, La. (LOCAL 33) (FOX 44) - Blue Star Mothers of Louisiana hosted a Wreaths Across America event Saturday at the Baton Rouge National Cemetery.

The event honors veterans and family members who lost a loved one in service by laying a wreath on the gravestones of fallen soldiers.

Michael Weatehers lost his son, Andrew, in Afghanistan in 2014.

"This day last year we were at Arlington National Cemetery for Wreaths Across America to participate in that and lay a Christmas wreath on his grave, so that was a very special day for us," Weathers said.

Carrie Davis is Andrew Weathers' sister. She said these events mean a lot to family members, especially around the holidays.

"It's comforting to know there are people in Arlington and somebody is going to lay our wreath on Andy's headstone today and to say his name," Davis said. "I hope that's also comforting to the families that can't be here that there are so many people, us including, that are taking the time to remember and honor the fallen here."

The Wreaths of America events took place at over 1,500 cemeteries across the country Saturday.
