HOUSTON, Tx. (BRPROUD.com) – Southern’s win against Texas Southern was the Jaguars’ third 50-point game in the last two seasons, but the offense scored more through the air than on the ground. The Jags threw four passing touchdowns. In the previous two 50-point outings, Southern receivers caught two touchdowns combined, and the Blue & Gold had its tight ends to thank for success in the air attack.
“I always say man you tough on offense when you utilize the tight ends, and we got a good one. Ethan Howard is a freshman that’s only going to get better. Travis Tucker is coming on at that position–Clyefer Bass and (Gregory) Perkins–so we’re getting those guys healthy. They’re playing better, and it’s about playing with confidence. I think that room is doing that,” head coach Dawson Odums said.
Howard caught two receiving touchdowns for the Jaguars, and the tight ends and offensive line showed how tough Southern’s offense could be. The Jags ran for 195 rushing yards in the second half alone.
“Our offensive line and our tight ends did a great job of blocking, and it was good to see. I thought those guys, at the point of attack, were in position, and the backs made some great cuts with great vision. I think, when you have that, you’re able to run the football. I thought it was just us leaning more on the running game in the second half,” Odums added.
