BATON ROUGE, La — When starting quarterback BeSean McCray left the game with an injury after the opening drive, a story emerged that even the writers at Disney couldn’t think of.
Senior Glendon “Bubba” McDaniel stepped up on Senior Day.
He delivered three total touchdowns in a 27-7 win against Mississippi Valley State at A.W. Mumford Stadium for the last time, playing with the brothers he made on The Bluff.
“It’s crazy. We came in straight out of high school together. Still you are still young minded going and being at Southern you go, go through stuff. And I don’t know, we’ve all grown together and it’s a great feeling.” McDaniel said.
He wasn’t the only senior in the spotlight. Defensive end Jalen Ivy tied for the team lead in sacks with 1.5, disrupting promising looking drives for the Delta Devils. Yet the performance from McDaniel made Ivy emotional.
“I danged near cried. I can’t lie to you. The confidence, integrity, like humility. I can’t speak more highly of anybody else on this team like we’re here because we love Southern.” Ivy said.
The seniors showing out was the perfect storybook ending for head coach Eric Dooley’s older players.
“I know a lot of guys put so much time in to it and you kind of want them to reap the benefits from just being a Jaguar and just showing that pride. So we just wanted to make sure everybody had a lasting moment in Mumford Stadium.” Dooley said.
The victory caps off an undefeated 5-0 season on The Bluff. Something that Jags can celebrate as a SWAC championship, seems just a bit out of reach.
They’ll need the 1-9 Delta Devils who they beat here today to win against Prairie View and Southern will also need to win in the Bayou Classic.
