BATON ROUGE, La. – Southern’s basketball teams are in the same position as football: Waiting to see if and when they can train for a season. While the Jaguars on the hardwood await a decision, coaches Sean Woods and Carlos Funchess are doing their best to keep their rosters ready.
“I think it’s very important just to keep the kids engaged, keep ’em motivated, keep them ready to go. I mean at all times cause it’s been a long layoff for everybody,” Funchess said.
“It’s a day-to-day process. You got to treat every day like it’s the same and hope that our season won’t be delayed, and if it does, they’ll let us know in optimal time,” Woods continued.
When Southern gets the clear, the coaches are going to get the players back in game-shape gradually, but they also highlight how it’s not how they start the season but end the year, hoping the same way they ended 2020.
“You can’t just go in there gung-ho, and it’s a long season anyway. Just like we proved this past season, you want to be ready. You want to be the best team in March,” the men’s coach said.
“You have to make preparations for and know that they hadn’t been conditioning like they normally would be if they were here at school. You would start ’em off slowly and then just build on that,” Funchess added.
