BATON ROUGE, La. – Southern University baseball team grabbed an early lead over the Panthers to cruise to a 8-2 win on Saturday afternoon, in front of 532 fans at Lee-Hines Stadium.
The Jaguars pulled away in the second inning, scoring three runs. Senior pitcher Joseph Battaglia pitched his third complete game of the season throwing 112 pitches with seven strike outs.
The Jaguars picked up eight runs off nine hits. In the first inning, Jovante Dorris scored the Jags first run of the day off an error by the first baseman. In the second inning SU had bases loaded, Jaylen Armstrong was hit by a pitch to advance Jaylen Armstrong home to tie the ball game at 2-all. Dorris singled down the left field line to send Hunter Tabb and Nathaniel Lai home, giving the Jaguars a 4-2 lead.
In the fourth inning, Armstrong scored off a wild pitch. Dorris scored off a balk by the Panthers pitcher. In the eighth inning, JJ Rollon singled through the left side to send Justin Wiley across home plate. Burgos singled to right field to send Dorris home to pick up his third run of the day.
“Joseph Battaglia started and finished the game today, which was big for us with a doubleheader tomorrow. Offensively Jovante Dorris was big,” Southern head baseball coach Chris Crenshaw said. “Several other guys did well today also.”
Battaglia moves to 7-4 on the season.
Southern is now 19-28, 16-9 SWAC on the season.
Southern will be back in action on Friday night as they take on Prairie View A&M for a three game weekend series. First pitch is slated for 6 PM.
