BATON ROUGE, La. – Southern maintained a stable of veteran wide receivers from the spring roster. Jamar Washington, Marquis McClain and Jorien Vallien were key returners in the receiving corps, but freshman Tyler Kirkwood ended fall camp with a strong performance, including two touchdowns in the Jags’ final scrimmage. The first-year wideout has been working for playing time in the preseason.
“Tyler Kirkwood has had a really good football camp. Everyone in the public actually had an opportunity to see what we’ve been watching all fall camp. Getting the opportunity to see guys catch the ball downfield, make explosive plays in the pass game, is always good for us to see,” interim head coach Jason Rollins said.
Kirkwood hasn’t been named a starter, but if he sees significant playing time, it’ll be after weeks of competition in the position group. Washington’s return highlighted Southern’s wideouts, but finding a lead dog in the pack has been challenging.
“Tyler’s been very consistent throughout, but everyday, a different guy emerges to show that they can make plays for us on Saturday nights. Jamar is always consistent. He’s gonna always be there, very solid receiver. Marquis (McClain), he’s actually playing really, really well: strong catching the ball, making explosive plays after the catch. We’re excited about the whole group. They’ve all stepped it up and elevated their games from the spring,” Rollins added.
