Southern NIL policy still a work in progress

BATON ROUGE, La. – While players like Jordan Lewis, who became the first player in the history of the SWAC to win the Buck Buchanan Award, the current question has become “where is Southern’s NIL policy?” The answer: Still in progress.

“We are in the process of developing and getting our policy approved by our board, and once I send it up to the president, we get it up to the board agenda. Then, we still start our regulations as it relates to moving forward with our names, images and likeness policies,” Banks said.

Southern officials will have to approve the policy, but the university’s board only meets once a month. The next meeting is July 16th. The window will shrink for Jaguar football players to sign deals before the season starts on September 4th, but pending approval, athletes on the Bluff will know who and what they can do business with before the end of the month.

“The student athletes cannot engage if you have corporate sponsor contracts with a company and it’s its rival sot here’s some things that you have to govern on your campus. There’s some responsibilities about the student athletes to make sure that we are all working in harmony together,” Banks added.
