JACKSON, Ms. (BPROUD.com) – “It’s a wonderful rivalry, man, but you don’t know until you get in it. I cannot wait to really see it myself, and face it, and feel it and touch it. I love rivalries. I love these type of games. I can’t wait to be involved in it,” Deion Sanders said.
Southern will have the chance to introduce Jackson State’s head football coach to the BoomBox Classic. Unfortunately, we won’t see the Human Jukebox battle the Sonic Boom, but the game will feature different pageantry this season.
Sanders’ “Coach Prime” status coupled with a 4 p.m. kickoff on ESPN will draw more attention to Saturday’s game, and during Monday’s SWAC Media Call, Southern head coach Dawson Odums already knew all eyes will be on the Jaguars and Tigers come April 3rd.
“It’s always good. I think anytime Southern University and Jackson State can take on each other it’s great for our conference. It’s great for the fanbases, two really good football teams competing, and we’re looking forward to the challenge; but I think it’s like any other day. I think Jackson State and Southern University could play in the summer and fans would be excited about it,” Odums said.
Viewers across the country could tune in to the 66th edition of the rivalry, and with the off-the-field elements at play, distractions could emerge for the players. Coach Odums doesn’t see the game’s attention as a problem for the Blue and Gold.
“I think when you have a football team that’s been in games you have a culture that’s created. You have great leadership in the locker room. I think you have an understanding of the expectations, and I don’t see this game being no different,” Odums added.
