BATON ROUGE, La. – The No. 2 Texas Longhorns will be Southern’s opponent, when the Jaguars travel to UFCU Disch-Falk Field for the Austin Regional. The Blue and Gold understand the challenge in front of them, but Southern was just happy to hear their name called on Selection Monday.
“It’s awesome. It’s always great to win a championship. We got a good, new group of guys all came in, and just to make sure they get to have the same experiences,” infielder Zavier Moore said.
“They could be getting ready for summer ball. They could be getting ready for summer school, but these guys getting ready to play games. We been through a lot of adversity all year, with road games, battling COVID, injuries, for it to all come together at the end to win a championship,” Southern interim head baseball coach Chris Crenshaw added.
The Jaguars plan to give their younger teammates a better run in this year’s tournament. Southern won the 2019 SWAC Title and clinched a berth in the big dance as well, but with their second consecutive tournament appearance now official, the Jags will lean on their experience in the last postseason to extend their run this year.
“We still got teammates that were on that team; and they know what it takes; and they got to feel that again; and that’s a really good feeling; and we can’t wait to do it again,” infielder O’Neill Burgos said.
“It shows that those guys that, with the experience that we have, it’ll give them a little boost to show them that ‘okay, this is what we need to do. There’s things we need to get done, and this how it should be done,'” senior pitcher John Guienze said.
Southern and Texas will play at 1 p.m. central time to begin the Austin Regional.
