Southern running back prepares for senior football season amid pandemic

BATON ROUGE, La. – Seniors on the Bluff could have an unusual end to their college careers, and the Jaguars’ lead running back Devon Benn had to see the silver lining about a spring finale to his time at Southern.

“He wasn’t too happy about it. Then, we talked recently about what’s happening with the guys that got a shot to go and try out for the NFL. That was cut short because of the pandemic so it really was a blessing,” George Benn, Devon’s father, said.

“Just with all that’s going on with the pandemic. I felt like ‘man, maybe we should be praying that it’s pushed back to the spring.’ At least, it’ll be safer. Only discomfort I have is that they’re only playing six games,” Devon’s mother Deon Benn added.

The Jaguars could play eight games in the spring 2021 season. The SWAC released six-game slates for each team, but the universities can add a non-conference opponent. If Southern has seven regular season matchups and reaches the SWAC Championship, the Jaguars could stretch their season to an eighth game.

However, preparing for a final bid to the NFL will be key for the New Orleans native when he hits the field in February, and his parents are helping him stay disciplined ahead of next season.

“Eating right, sleeping, keep up with his regular routine of working out. Don’t get lazy. He’s pretty much in the same routine,” George explained.

Laziness is one thing head coach Dawson Odums doesn’t tolerate, and the Benns trust Odums both with helping their son be a man of good character and, during the pandemic, good health.

“Playing for Coach Odums, I’ll leave him there for years. He really take care of the boy. I think he gives them enough insight on what to do and how to do it, and if they follow what he got lined up for them, I think they’ll be fine on campus,” George said.

“What they choose to do, as a team, it’s going to determine the health. It doesn’t matter if they’re at Southern, or if they’re home or wherever they are. It’s all incumbent upon their decisions and what they choose to do,” Deon stated.
