BATON ROUGE, La. – The Jaguars finished the last two seasons as the SWAC’s top rushing offense. Southern has been expanding its passing game, but the ground and pound attack the Blue and Gold are known for will still be the offense’s foundation.
“We gonna always emphasize the run first. Then, you have your 7-on-7 and your team pass that emphasize the pass as well so we are a run-first football team,” interim head coach Jason Rollins said.
“The small things, working on the small things. We fix the small things that fixes our foundation, and we can grow bigger than we ever dreamed of,” sophomore running back Jerodd Sims said.
The running back room returned veterans Devon Benn, Craig Nelson and Sims, but none of the ball carriers have become the lead back. Each rusher has competed for starter reps.
“If one is doing well, that means the package that we’re in is doing well so that guy has to stay in the game,” Rollins added.
“We humble. Everybody’s coachable. Devon coach me on stuff. Jerodd coach me on stuff. We humble. Everybody is trying to get to the next level so everybody’s coachable,” Nelson said.
“It’s really fun to play out there with those guys. We’re a real brotherhood. We all humble. We understand how our room is: how it works, how we all complement to the system. When we all out there making it work, man it’s fun,” Sims said.
