Southern University football field to be named after former Coach Pete Richardson

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – Southern University Athletics announced that the football field will be named after former Coach Pete Richardson. The official name of the field will be “Pete Richardson Field” in A.W. Mumford Stadium at Southern Unversity.

On Friday, the new name of the field was approved by the Southern University System Board of Supervisors.

The field’s name honors former Coach Richardson. During his time at the university, he led the Jaguar football team to 134 wins. Most notably, five SWAC titles and four HBCU National Championships were won.

The Jaguars also made six Heritage Bowl appearances with a 4-2 record.

Coach Richardson was named SWAC Coach of the Year five times (1995, 97, 98, 99 & 2003). He is also a member of the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame and Winston Salem State University.
