Southern University band to self-fund ‘Rose Bowl’ appearance; seeks help from community

BATON ROUGE, La. (WVLA/WGMB) — One local band is garnering the attention of celebrities and performing on national stages that many people only dream about. Southern University’s band, also known as the Human Jukebox, has a full holiday schedule planned in southern California.

On Dec. 29, the Human Jukebox will perform during the half-time show of a Lakers’ game in Los Angeles. The group will also appear in the 131st Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena on New Year’s Day. The appearance will be televised nationally on NBC.

The ‘once in a lifetime’ experiences however, come with a hefty price tag. The group will privately fund all expenses for the trip and are now seeking help from the community to make their dream become reality.

With the support of the university, a campaign called “SU Marching Band: Road to the Rose Parade” kicked off shortly after the formal announcement. People may make a donation in any amount through TrueBLUE, the university’s official foundation portal.

The Human Jukebox is also featured in the official music video ‘Good as Hell,’ by Grammy nominated musician Lizzo, which debuted on Dec. 9.
