BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. The program will be coming to Scotlandville this Saturday.
TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At the TEDxScotlandville event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group.
Historically a prominent bustling self-sustainable business district, now an emerging cultural district, Scotlandville is home to some of the most influential persons talented in agriculture, trade skills, doctors and nurses. This event aims to allow people in this community to tell their own stories.
TEDxScotlandville’s 2023 theme “The Message,” is coined from the seven-minute social political Hip Hop song “The Message,” which was the first commercially successful single without a party influence by Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five.
The song “The Message,” was released in 1982 during the same time Scotlandville started to decline. The song, released by the independent Black record label Sugar Hill Records by Sylvia Robinson, is considered one of the most important songs of all time.
Here’s who will be speaking at the event:
- Baton Rouge Police Chief Murphy Paul Jr.
- Rahzel (GRAMMY Award-winning hip-hop pioneer)
- Raymond Jetson (Catalyst)
- Gary Chambers (former candidate for U.S. Senate)
- Anthony Kimble (real estate developer)
- Mele & Manaia (14- and 12-year-old polyglots)
- Elijah Priestly (child prodigy)
- Ellen McKnight (nutritionist)
