BRG: 20% of COVID patients are in ICU

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – COVID-19 patients are continuing to fill up one local hospital.

Over the last week, Baton Rouge General has seen an increase in COVID patients in the hospital and ICU.

The average age of a BRG COVID patient skews older and the majority of patients are unvaccinated.

Baton Rouge General is providing these details about what COVID-19 cases look like in their hospital:

  • On Monday, Baton Rouge General has 73 COVID patients, up from 53 last Monday
  • The average age of a COVID patient at BRG is 63.
  • 73% of BRG’s COVID patients are unvaccinated.
  • The average age of a vaccinated COVID patient at BRG is 77 years old.
  • Of the vaccinated patients in the hospital, 70% did not receive a booster.
  • The average age of those hospitalized patients who did receive a booster is 80 years old.
  • The positivity rate of people who are tested for COVID at a BRG facility or clinic is 30%

One-fifth of the COVID patients at Baton Rouge General are currently in the ICU.

That is still well below the number of COVID patients found in the BRG ICU during August of 2021.

According to Baton Rouge General, “At the peak of the last surge, on August 7, 47% of the hospital’s COVID patients were in the ICU.”
