BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Knock Knock Children’s Museum Executive Director Pete Claffey recently announced the museum’s decision to remain closed due to a rise in COVID-19 cases in the Baton Rouge area.

“With the announcement on Monday by Governor John Bel Edwards that he is extending Phase 2 for another 28 days, the hope of Knock Knock Children’s Museum re-opening soon after the Fourth of July has faded. But Knock Knock’s leadership and staff continue to prepare daily for the return of children interacting, exploring, using their imaginations and playing in the museum’s 18 Learning Zones as soon as possible.
Although Governor John Bel Edwards’ Phase 2 Re-opening Guidelines does allow children’s museums to re-open, it only does so if all tactile and interactive exhibits remain closed. After studying the guidelines, working with numerous local, state, and national officials, along with leaders of other state museums, we have decided to remain closed for the time being.
While we are extremely disappointed that we aren’t moving to Phase 3, our stance hasn’t changed. We would rather err on the side of caution, than move too quickly and have to close again because of an outbreak of the virus. The safety of our visitors and staff is our top priority. We are confident in the Governor and his team as they continue to guide us through this unprecedented situation.
This is a challenging time for a lot of businesses, and Knock Knock is no exception. We are going into our fourth month with zero revenue, which is hard to fathom. However, we are fortunate that our Founders and Board of Directors have been vigilant in their stewardship of the museum’s finances. Their diligence has allowed us to weather this storm—so far—but with no money coming in, we can only hold on for so long. But we aren’t sitting around waiting and hoping. If you can’t go to Knock Knock, we’re going to bring Knock Knock to you.
In the next few weeks, Knock Knock will be launching our brand-new, state-of-the-art digital production studio. This will give us the ability to produce high-quality, engaging, and exciting live-streamed content that will bring Knock Knock right into your living room or wherever you happen to be. We are building on our Knock Knock At Your Door video series and our Knock Knock At Your Door LIVE! Mini-camp experience. These new online programs will range from art projects and science experiments to exploring nature and engineering, all taught by our highly trained and dynamic Learning Innovations team. We will be releasing more information on this groundbreaking new program very soon.”
