“We have close to 300 group exercise classes that we offer across our association,” said YMCA Executive Director of Healthy Lifestyles Julie Russell.
The YMCA offers everything from high intensity classes like cycling to Thai Chi.
Russell said there is always a way to make the class your own.
“The truth of the matter is that you can find something in every class that fits you. You can modify to your intensity.”
No matter what class you choose, you’re sure to get a great workout.
“The best thing is that you’re moving. Even if it’s our chair yoga classes, or one of our stretching classes, or whether it’s one of the high intensity training classes. You’re not only feeding the body, you’re also feeding the mind and the spirit. That’s very important to overall health.”
Group exercise classes are also great for building friendships and accountability.
“Well we know it’s great for cardiovascular health, for strength to build endurance and for flexibility and mobility. While all of those are super important, we find the biggest payoff is the family that people build while you are there, especially at the YMCA.”
Russell said to be on the look out for the YMCA’s new class designed for a quick, in and out workout that will rock your core.
“It is a 30 minute in and out the door core class. What it is not is a crunches on the floor class. It’s a strength class that works the front, the back, the sides of the core, and what that does is help you get through the day, helps you walk taller, sit taller, feel better and pump the heart.”
