BATON ROUGE, LA (LOCAL33) (FOX44) – If you’re looking for a new workout in the new year that helps your mind, body and soul you may want to take a crack at yoga.
Many people use the new year to reset their focus.
YMCA Personal Trainer Meredith Atterbery said Yoga is a great way to do just that.
“I love that yoga connects the mind and the body. It really brings those two elements together through breathing and meditation. That’s going to carry over into everything you do.”
What exactly is yoga?
“Yoga is a great way to increase flexibility. It also helps train muscles, and you will increase your heart rate, so it’s really good for your cardio vascular system too.”
Atterbery said keeping the body limber can help prevent injuries.
“Flexibility is crucial. It’s great to have strong muscles, but if their not flexible then you are at a higher risk for injuries. Stretching that long lean muscle is going to decrease your risk for injury.”
The best part is you don’t have to be an expert to participate.
“Yoga is absolutely for everybody. Yes, there is some time that you spend on the floor, but other than that literally anyone can do it.”
You can also explore other levels of yoga to better suit your needs.
“Jump in there. Try it. There are tons of different forms of yoga. Some yoga is done in a chair, some is done in the water. Just try it! If you don’t like it that’s OK. At least you tried it and then you’ll know for the future.”

“What yoga does is it takes that breath and combines that mind with the breath so that everything else just dispersal.”
