GONZALES, La. (BRPROUD) – The Baton Rouge Redsticks will build an open-air stadium in Gonzales for the 2023 season. The construction is expected to be complete in time for the April 1 season opener against the Mississippi Mudcats.

The United Football League team announced a partnership with the Parish of Ascension in a news release, describing the temporary stadium as another step “to solidify our collective goal of constructing a new stadium for the Baton Rouge Redsticks and the communities of Baton Rouge, Gonzales, and New Orleans.”

The arena, which is expected to seat 8,400, will break ground at the Lamar Dixon Expo Center, 9039 S. St. Landry Ave., Gonzales, in February. It’s expected to be finished by March.

The Redsticks ultimately plan to build a permanent facility in South Louisiana but plan to use this one for two seasons. According to the release, the move will make the team the first spring football organization to have one, and it’s geared to ensure the sport stays in the long term.

A news conference with team and league officials is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Dec. 28 at the Lamar Dixon Expo Center. The event is open to the public.
