Lowery Middle School shelter closes, Lamar Dixon Expo Center shelter location remains open

ASCENSION PARISH, La. (BRPROUD) – Ascension Parish officials said that the Lowery Middle School storm shelter in Donaldsonville is no longer open.

The Lamar Dixon Expo Center remains open to shelter individuals.

ORIGINAL STORY:

ASCENSION PARISH, La – The Ascension Parish government will have two evacuation shelters open at 8 a.m. on Sunday, August 29.

The first shelter is the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center in the gym located at 9039 S. St. Landry Ave, in Gonzales, La. The second shelter is at Lowery Middle School, which is located at 2389 LA 1 South, in Donaldsonville, La.

Both shelters will be operated by the Ascension Parish government and will have a certain number of amenities.

Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office will provide security.

People that are planning to stay at the shelters are asked to bring enough food and personal items to last for three to five days.

Below is a list of items to bring:

  • Water
  • Food
  • Clothing
  • Bedding
  • Medication
  • Toiletries
  • Charging objects for electronics

Cots will be provided. Shelters are going to operate under all COVID-19 guidelines and restrictions. Everyone is to practice social distancing and to wear face masks.

“This is a dangerous storm, do not take it lightly,” Parish President Clint Cointment said. “If you think
your home may not be safe, don’t take any chances; please come to a shelter.”
