The protocol comes in after the Government of Japan issued a state of emergency in Tokyo. However, some venues outside of Tokyo will be able to have spectators. A total of 42 venues exist in Japan.
There have been 870,445 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Japan since the beginning of the pandemic, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
Nevertheless, with or without kankyaku, Tokyo 2020 forges ahead with spectators cheering their teams from home.
