Target to hire 130,000 seasonal holiday employees

BATON ROUGE, La. (BR Proud) — Target said it plans to hire about 130,000 seasonal workers for the holidays, which is in line with its hiring last year, according to CNBC.

The retailer said it plans to change it approach to staffing by dedicating more workers to same-day services such as curbside pickup and hiring more people at distribution centers.

Some store workers will focus solely on safety and cleaning. More employees are also expected to be cross-trained so they can switch from task to task, like helping with curbside pickup during peak hours or disinfecting shopping carts. More than 90% of the retailer’s online orders are fulfilled at stores.

Target’s chief human resources officer, Melissa Kremer, told CNBC that current employees may opt for additional hours and more duties outside of their usual department. About 40% of new seasonal hires in 2018 were retained as regular employees.
