Apprenticeship events taking place for Louisiana’s Apprenticeship Appreciation and Awareness Week

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Governor John Bel Edwards has declared Nov. 15-21 as Apprenticeship Appreciation and Awareness Week in Louisiana.

“Ensuring that Louisianans who are interested in starting or transitioning to new careers have the opportunity to learn new skills is critical to having a well-trained workforce,” said Gov. Edwards. “Knowing these programs are in place makes our state even more attractive to various companies seeking to relocate or expand. I’m proud to celebrate this week and all of the programs that provide continuous training which ultimately connects people to jobs that are rewarding and provide them a great quality of life.”

Four apprenticeship week events hosted by the Louisiana Workforce Commission (LWC) will take place throughout November. Events are as follows:

Statewide Apprenticeship Fair

  • November 17, 2021 – 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
  • Through LWC’s virtual job fair platform, job seekers will be able to communicate with programs and inquire about Registered Apprenticeship opportunities throughout the State of Louisiana in a variety of different industries and career paths.

Louisiana Virtual Apprenticeship Expo

  • November 17, 2021 – 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
  • LOSFA will host a statewide webinar for high school students, highlighting the benefits of Registered Apprenticeship as a career pathway. This event will feature speakers from LOFSA, USDOL and LWC, as well as recent apprentices.

Urban League – Apprenticeship Career Expo at Scotlandville High School

  • November 19, 2021 – 9 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
  • Urban League of Louisiana is connecting high school juniors and seniors in New Orleans and Baton
    Rouge to employment, education, and local service providers. It also gives them a chance to practice
    interacting and communicating with business professionals.
  • No registration needed for this event.

Registered Apprenticeship Healthcare Accelerator with H-CAP

  • November 30, 2021 – 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
  • Join the Healthcare Career Advancement Program in partnership with The Louisiana Workforce Commission, and Apprenticeship Louisiana. Hear from healthcare providers on how they have integrated Registered Apprenticeships into their current workforce training programs.

According to LWC, the state received its first federal Registered Apprenticeship grant in 2016, and since then the number of programs has nearly doubled with 75 opportunities now offered and more than 3,800 active apprentices.

“These programs are a valuable tool for building our state’s workforce and helping it reach its full potential,”
said LWC Secretary Ava Cates. “With opportunities in health care, carpentry, manufacturing and more,
Registered Apprenticeships are great for people who are just starting their careers or folks looking to gain new skills or switch careers entirely.”
