Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana released tips on how to best utilize Medicare Advantage plans, an alternative to original medicare plans offered by private companies Medicare has approved.
Those with Medicare Advantage should use their Medicare Advantage insurance cards rather than their original Medicare cards, and they should carry the new card with them at all times to ensure their benefits are paid for under their Medicare Advantage plan. Original Medicare cards should still be kept and stored in a safe place in case people ever need them again, according to Cindy Wakefield of Blue Cross.
Medicare Advantage users should also keep up with the Summary of Benefits document they received after signing up for their plan, Wakefield wrote. This document explains what coverage people have and how much users must pay for covered services.
It can be helpful for Medicare Advantage recipients to select a primary care provider who can help them make a plan for care, obtain medications and find specialists. Wakefield recommended scheduling a wellness visit with a primary care provider yearly.
