Four arrested in St. James Parish after shooting

VACHERIE, La. (BRPROUD) — Four people were arrested after a shootout in Vacherie.

On Wednesday, Oct. 20, the St. James Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported “shoot out” on Vacherie Road at 12:04 p.m. Detective investigation found that the motive for the shooting was regarding the theft of several puppies, according to Sheriff Willy J. Martin, Jr.

According to the sheriff’s office, Chandon Hickerson, the owner of the puppies, told authorities his puppies were stolen on Oct. 19 at 11 p.m. He told detectives that he was told that someone in a blue vehicle was seen putting a puppy in a trash can in the area.

Hickerson, Keith Burham, Jr., and Chase Geason went looking for the vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office. Once they found the described vehicle, a shoot-out took place. Authorities identified the people in the blue vehicle as Shawnchez Lemar and Caivon Vedol.

Lemar and Geason were injured in the shootout, according to detectives.

The following were arrested:

  • Keithon Burham, Jr., 21, of Vacherie faces two counts of attempted manslaughter and one count of aggravated criminal damage to property. His bond was set at $375,000.
  • Chandon Hickerson, 23, of Vacherie faces two counts of attempted manslaughter and one count of aggravated criminal damage to property. His bond was set at $375,000.
  • Shawnchez Lemar, 20, of Vacherie faces three counts of attempted manslaughter. His bond was set at $300,000.
  • Caivon Vedol, 19, of Vacherie faces three counts of attempted manslaughter. His bond was set at $450,000.
