BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Governor John Bel Edwards proclaims Monday, Oct. 24 as Red Beans and Rice Day in Louisiana.

The proclamation was made at 11 a.m. at the State Capitol’s steps in downtown. Gov. Edwards will be joined by Camellia Beans, Cajun Country Rice, Second Harvest Food Bank, and the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank.

In a statement online, Gov. Edwards said:

“This day serves multiple purposes, from celebrating Louisiana culture, supporting local, multi-generational owned businesses like @CajnCountryRice and @CamelliaBeans and our state’s agricultural industry, and bringing awareness to food insecurity in our communities.

So on this Red Beans and Rice Day, I have one request for you. Don’t take for granted this meal. And as you eat, make a commitment to giving back. Donate to your local food bank. Volunteer to serve meals. Advocate for policies that will help lift up families.”
