WASHINGTON, D.C. (BRPROUD) — A Louisiana soldier previously declared missing in action during World War II was accounted for in 2020.

The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) said Army Pvt. Hillary Soileau, 23, was a member of the Company F, 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division was wounded on January 14, 1943, when American forces went on the offensive to clear the Guadalcanal of Japanese forces. The agency said Soileau could not be found after the battle and following an extensive search, he was declared missing in action on February 3, 1943, before he was officially declared killed in action on Dec. 13, 1945.

According to DPAA, Soileau’s identity was discovered after “thorough historical research,” research included dental and anthropological analysis.

The agency said Soileau will be buried on May 21, 2022, in Washington, Louisiana.
