BATONR ROUEG, La. (BRPROUD) – The Louisiana Department of Health reported 14,077 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, which the agency said was a “single-day record.”

The previous single day record, set last week on December 30, was 12,647.

Twelve new deaths attributable to COVID were also recorded and hospitalizations across the state also rose from 1,287 on January 4 to 1,412 on January 5.

On Tuesday, Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome urged residents to take the basic precautions to prevent spreading the virus and to get vaccinated.

“As of Sunday, January 2, the Department of Health reported that 86 percent of the COVID-19 hospitalizations were not fully vaccinated in East Baton Rouge Parish.” said Broome.

Governor John Bel Edwards is scheduled to hold a press conference on Thursday to discuss the statewide response to the spread of the omicron variant.
