HOUMA, La. (BRPROUD) — State Police are investigating a fatal crash involving a bicyclist near Houma.
The bicyclist, 56-year-old Donald Gordon of Houma, died in the crash, according to Louisiana State Police (LSP).
Troopers responded to Hwy 24 south of Prospect Boulevard on Jan. 6. LSP investigation found that Gordon was riding a motorized bicycle north on the should of the highway while a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado traveled south. According to LSP, the driver of the truck attempted to make a left turn into a driveway and stopped in the northbound lane to avoid hitting the bicyclist. However, Gordon steered his bike left and hit the truck.
LSP said Gordon was not wearing a safety helmet during the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the truck was not injured in this crash.
The crash remains under investigation, according to LSP.
State Police remind residents of bicycle safety law:
“Louisiana state law requires operators of motorized bicycles to be at least 15-years-old, have a valid driver’s license, and wear a safety helmet while riding. Motorized bicycles are also required to have a headlamp and tail lamp and are prohibited from traveling on sidewalks or interstate highways.”
