Time is running out for Louisiana residents who need to register to vote or update their registration ahead of the upcoming Presidential Preference Primary.
The primary isn’t until April 4, but the deadline to register to vote or to update voter registration in-person or by mail is March 4. The last day to update online registration via GeauxVote.com is March 14, according to Registrar of Voters Steve Raborn.
The Presidential Preference Primary is the only Louisiana election that is a closed party primary, meaning a voter’s political party affiliation determines what will show up on their ballot. Voters will only be able to vote for presidential candidates and party committee members who are running for spots under the same political party as them. Democrats are only eligible to vote for Democratic candidates, and Republicans are only eligible to vote for Republican candidates.
Voters who are registered with other parties or who have no party affiliation will not be eligible to vote for presidential candidates or party committee members, but they can vote for other local candidates and propositions on the Arpil 4 ballot if they live within the appropriate jurisdictions, according to Raborn.
