PORT ALLEN, La. (BRPROUD) – Jazz icon Billie Holiday can be seen in a new light.

The Billie Holiday at Sugar Hill: Photographs by Jerry Dantzic exhibit has opened at the West Baton Rouge Museum. The exhibit has the largest collection of images from a single Billie Holiday club engagement, according to the Smithsonian.

Photographer Jerry Dantzic captured Billie Holiday on camera during her weeklong run at Sugar Hill, a New Jersey nightclub, in April 1957. Dantzic unexpectedly captured an intimate journey between Holiday’s private life with family and who she was in the public with fans.

The Smithsonian says the images were captured two years before her death.

The exhibit also features six vinyl quotes and a video of Holiday performing “Fine and Mellow” at Sugar Hill.

Billie Holiday at Sugar Hill: Photographs by Jerry Dantzic is a collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) and the Jerry Dantzic Archives.

The exhibit runs through January 7, 2023.

The West Baton Rouge Museum is located at 845 N. Jefferson Avenue in Port Allen.
