BATON ROUGE, La. (WVLA/WGMB) — A new parade is coming to town. The Krewe of Oshun is in its organizing stage, seeking sponsors and entries ahead of its Feb. 8 debut.
“The Oshun Parade will bring back the idea of African American parades in the capital city as it once was in 1947,” said parade organizer Byron Washington.
The parade will roll through historic Scotlandville, championing the culture and heritage of North Baton Rouge.
Southern University’s ‘Human Jukebox’ marching band is confirmed to participate in the event. Washington said there will also be at least five local high school bands, three of whom have won national awards.
“This parade will showcase Mardi Gras Indians and feature for the first time publicly the historic black cowboys of Baton Rouge on their horses,” said Washington.
At the end of the parade route, the festivities will continue with games, activities, food, contests, music performances and a ‘battle of the bands’ from local high schools.
